In the 1870’s following an epidemic breaking out in the city, the city administration quickly decided to temporarily transfer patients to the main psychiatric hospital. The grounds and some small buildings of the former palace and former convent were used. Years passed but the temporary solution became increasingly short, to the point that the back of the palace was used as a mental hospital of the province until its closure. So began a long history of over a hundred years, with the hospital being used for different purposes and facilities overstretched. When I visited it was apparent that it has suffered significantly from thieves and vandals with lots of items being destroyed, and graffiti starting to appear on the walls.
