The United Methodist Church was established in June 1896 as The Japanese Methodist Episcopal Mission of Los Angeles. It was founded by first-generation Issei immigrants from southern Japan. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbour on December 7 in 1941, many evacuated families stored their belongings in the church. After WWII, members returned to Los Angeles with nowhere to live, and the church served as both a spiritual home and a hostel for displaced families
