Krankenhaus was photographed in a sprawling sanatorium, which covered over 300 acres. Abandoned for almost 15 years, this sanatorium was used throughout World War One and Two. It has been used for a few movie sets and music videos, most probably owing to the great sense of eeriness it possesses, similar to a ghost town, as it is so large. I spent 12 hours in the complex, which is made up of over 50 buildings.

This building is the largest building in the male quarter of the whole complex. These pavilions were the main treatment areas in sanatoriums for tuberculosis sufferers, requiring plenty of fresh air and bed-rest in peaceful surroundings. The pavilions were ornately decorated and despite the wards themselves being somewhat repetitive in order to house literally thousands of patients, the buildings still contained prominent features. The central staircase is a testament to the impressive style of the period.

Due to the pavilion being in use much longer than many other buildings, it has withstood the test of time rather well. When I visited it hadn’t been maintained for 20 years, and was showing some signs of water damage. It has now been fully renovated.
