This asylum opened back in the 1850s. Originally named as a Pauper Lunatic Asylum, (a pretty unsavoury title!) this hospital was designed to a corridor plan layout.
A sprawling red brick Victorian building, it was isolated on the top of a hill, a throwback to the days when people with mental illnesses were shipped off to the asylum and rarely seen again. Apparently the term 'going up the hill' was the local colloquialism for 'losing your mind'.
