This former training school was built in the early 1900s and became known for its tough regime. Thousands of young recruits passed through its gates over the decades, each required to climb the towering mast in the parade ground as part of their initiation. The mast, a striking landmark, still stands today, although it remains out of reach due to on-site security.
The site closed in the mid-1970s after changes in education law and naval recruitment made it redundant, and it was later used as a police training college until the late 1990s. Since its final closure, there have been recurring talks of demolition and redevelopment into housing, but no significant progress has been made.
The canteen, pictured here, was a large two-storey hall where meals were taken by most personnel, with only senior staff dining separately. Once decorated in an elegant art deco style with soft pastel tones, the space has since fallen silent. Now, the floor is covered in a lush carpet of moss, creating a surreal and atmospheric scene of nature reclaiming the building.
