A quiet devotional space within Vallombrosa Abbey, Tuscany. Founded by Saint Giovanni Gualberto in the 11th century, Vallombrosa became the centre of the Vallombrosan monastic order. The earliest community worshipped in a simple wooden oratory before building a stone church in 1058, while the monastery continued to expand through the medieval and Renaissance periods. Much of the imposing complex visible today dates from the 15th and 17th centuries.
I photographed the abbey as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, documenting important State-owned sites across Italy and the architectural, cultural and human histories embedded within them. Photographs from this project are currently on display at Villa Bardini in Florence as part of my exhibition Memoria e Visione, on view through September.
