Founded by Saint Giovanni Gualberto in the 11th century, Vallombrosa became the centre of the Vallombrosan monastic order. The earliest community worshipped in a simple wooden oratory before building a stone church in 1058, while the monastery continued to expand through the medieval and Renaissance periods. Much of the imposing complex visible today dates from the 15th and 17th centuries.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI photographed the abbey as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, documenting important State-owned sites across Italy and the architectural, cultural and human histories embedded within them.
