Morning light entering one of the monastic corridors at Vallombrosa Abbey, with its historic stone basins and tall gridded windows. The abbey was founded by Saint Giovanni Gualberto in the 11th century, with a stone church built by the community in 1058. The complex developed substantially over the following centuries, particularly during the 15th and 17th centuries, creating the mixture of medieval, Renaissance and later Baroque architecture seen today.
I photographed Vallombrosa Abbey as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, exploring Italy's State-owned architectural heritage and the layers of history preserved within these remarkable buildings. Photographs from this project are currently on display at Villa Bardini in Florence as part of my exhibition Memoria e Visione, on view through September.
