The abbey was founded by Saint Giovanni Gualberto in the 11th century, with a stone church built by the community in 1058. The complex developed substantially over the following centuries, particularly during the 15th and 17th centuries, creating the mixture of medieval, Renaissance and later Baroque architecture seen today.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI photographed Vallombrosa Abbey as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, exploring Italy's State-owned architectural heritage and the layers of history preserved within these remarkable buildings.
