One of the weathered stone sculptures in the gardens of Villa Bardini, overlooking Florence with the Duomo beyond. The gardens contain a remarkable collection of sculpture, fountains and architectural fragments gathered across the estate. Villa Bardini was built in 1641 as Villa Manadora, designed by Gherardo Silvani for Francesco Manadori as a 17th-century country retreat overlooking Florence. Its gardens evolved over centuries, combining formal Italian and Baroque elements with later Anglo-Chinese and Victorian influences. The estate was acquired by antiquarian Stefano Bardini in 1913 and became State property in 1987. I photographed Villa Bardini as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, exploring the history, identity and transformation of Italy's public architectural heritage. My exhibition Memoria e Visione is still on view in the Serra at Villa Bardini.
