The historic library at Vallombrosa Abbey, Tuscany. The abbey was founded in the 11th century by Saint Giovanni Gualberto and became the mother house of the Vallombrosan Order. The library itself was built in 1584 by architect Alfonso Parigi and was later modernised in the Neoclassical style in the early 19th century. Its octagonal table and fitted bookcases were made by cabinetmaker Antonio Moschini. The large painting depicts the Donation of Matilda of Canossa to Saint Bernardo degli Uberti, painted by Donato Arsenio Mascagni in 1609.

I photographed Vallombrosa Abbey as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, documenting significant buildings within Italy's State-owned architectural heritage and the histories held within them. Photographs from this project are currently on display in the Serra at Villa Bardini in Florence as part of my exhibition Memoria e Visione, on view through September.
