To the left stands the monument to Emanuele Notarbartolo, former mayor of Palermo and director of the Banco di Sicilia, remembered for his opposition to corruption and Mafia influence. He was assassinated in 1893, in a killing now regarded as one of the earliest high-profile political Mafia murders in Italy. The sculpture was created by Antonio Ugo, with its pedestal designed by Ernesto Basile, and inaugurated in 1900.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe building itself was transformed between 1840 and 1844 by architect Emanuele Palazzotto, who gave the former Vicaria prison its monumental Neoclassical form, including the distinctive portico. I photographed Palazzo delle Finanze as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, documenting Italy's State-owned architectural heritage.
