In the Soviet Union, playing piano was a common cultural skill. Music schools weren’t free, so owning a piano was a symbol of both education and status. This shop in Pripyat originally sold TVs, hi-fis, and other household goods. Some pianos were moved here after the evacuation. There are no pianos visible in this shot, but I was drawn to the soft autumn colours, the missing panes, and the quiet structure of the building.
