The stage of Teatro Ernesto Rossi, framed by its surviving boxes, fading decoration and soaring architectural arches. Built in 1770 to designs by architect Zanobi del Rosso, the theatre was inaugurated as the Teatro Nuovo in 1771. Designed in the traditional Italian style, its horseshoe-shaped auditorium is surrounded by tiers of ornate private boxes, later remodelled and decorated during the 19th century. It became one of Pisa's most important theatres before closing in 1966. I photographed Teatro Ernesto Rossi as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, documenting significant public buildings and the traces of history that remain within them.
