The abbey was established in the 12th century. A masterpiece of Baroque architecture, the impressive structure is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The façade is over 200m. During World War II many of the smaller structures on site were used for secret research labs. At the end of the war, The Red Army soldiers were stationed here, and it was also used as a hospital. Decades of neglect followed. It has been under renovation for almost two decades, yet parts of it are still completely neglected.
