A stripped-back interior at Palazzo delle Finanze, where decorative plasterwork survives above roughened walls and worn surfaces. Above the doorway is the Trinacria, or Sicilian triskelion, one of the island's most recognisable symbols. It features the head of Medusa at its centre, surrounded by three bent legs and ears of wheat. The three legs are traditionally associated with Sicily's triangular form and its three historic headlands, while the wheat represents the fertility and agricultural richness of the island. Versions of the symbol date back to antiquity and appear on ancient Sicilian coins. Today, the Trinacria sits at the centre of the official Sicilian flag.
Palazzo delle Finanze was developed from the late 16th century on the site of the former Vicaria prison and substantially transformed in 1840 by architect Emanuele Palazzotto, who gave the building much of its present Neoclassical character. I photographed the site as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, documenting significant State-owned buildings and the histories still held within them. Work from this project is currently exhibited at the Palermo Urban Center as part of Memoria e Visione, on view until the end of September.
